Thank You For The Enlightenment

150x76 cm / 59x30 in
Pencil on paper, 2026

“Thank You for the Enlightenment” explores the peculiar discomfort of receiving wisdom that was never asked for. In an irreverent reference to Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam”, the figure turns away from the viewer, abandoning the dignity of divine revelation for an awkward, exposed, almost defiant pose. What should be a moment of enlightenment becomes one of frustration, vulnerability, and quiet resistance. The work reflects on the unsolicited advice and life lessons passed down by older generations and society at large, often accompanied by the assumption that those who question them simply haven’t understood enough. Yet the self-appointed enlightener may be equally limited, repeating inherited beliefs with unwavering certainty.
